The discovery of a unique pattern in 1995, own to the North-Eastern parts of Limpopo Province in South Africa and the need for localized employment, lead to the formal establishment of Afrikania in 1999 in Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
Used to decorate some traditional clay houses, it was found where Tsonga and Pedi people lived together. Applied as an important element at a new lodge in a Nature reserve to the north of Phalaborwa in 1997, the pattern soon revealed its true beauty and versatile nature as a decorating pattern. When designer Tom Joubert, who discovered the pattern and founder of Afrikania, was asked to create something for an Art Bazaar of a local Church in 1998, the first of what became a range of distinguished products now traveling the world, was created.
